5. Optical: Concordia Station

The French-Italian Concordia station is located at an altitude of 3230 meter on Dome C, on the Antarctic high plateau. Astronomy at Concordia consists in atmospheric characterization (40-cm telescopes and various experiments), one 2.60-metre submillimetre-wave telescope (COCHISE) and an experiment dedicated to the cosmological background (BRAIN). One 0.40-meter telescope dedicated to the detection of planetary extrasolar transits (A STEP) and a 0.80-meter infrared robotic telescope (IRAIT) will be operational next year.
