Local Group of Galaxies: Andromeda Galaxy (M31)
The Andromeda Galaxy (M31, NGC 224) is our nearest large neighbor galaxy at a distance of 2.9 million light-years. It is very similar to the Milky Way Galaxy in type, but about twice as big while apparently perhaps thirty percent less massive. It is part of the Local Group of galaxies together with its companions (including M32 and M110, two bright dwarf elliptical galaxies), our Milky Way and its companions, M33, and others. The Hubble Space Telescope has revealed that the Andromeda galaxy M31 has a double nucleus. The Andromeda Galaxy is clearly visible to the naked eye although no structure can be seen. (For further details see Andromeda Galaxy.)
