"Around the World in 80 Telescopes" was a unique live 24-hour webcast, held April 3-4, 2009, that visited some of the most advanced observatories both on and off the planet.

"Around the World in 80 Telescopes" was organized by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), from its head-quarters in Garching, Germany, and was part of the IYA-2009 "100 Hours of Astronomy" global event held April 2-5, 2009.  LEARN MORE »

International Year of Astronomy 2009This is all part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA-2009), a global effort initiated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and UNESCO to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night-time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery. The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is endorsed by the United Nations and the International Council of Science (ICSU).

Find out what's happening at various research observatories around the world, and discover what astronomers are doing right now! Who is observing? What are they researching? What do they hope to discover?

Through "Around the World in 80 Telescopes" you'll see a snapshot of life at many different observatories where astronomers will present exclusive images and talk about their work.

Video Preview: Starting with a short segment on the overall event, then a tour of ESO's Very Large Telescope at the La Silla Paranal Observatory, Paranal, Chile.

Throughout the series, some will be observing distant galaxies, searching for extrasolar planets around other stars or studying our own Solar System. Some will be studying the Universe in visible light, others in radio-waves or other wavelengths. Some may be working at solar observatories or with telescopes out in space. All of them will have a different story to tell.
