2007 - B. S. Physics and Astronomy, Colgate University, Hamilton, New York.

Research Interests

  • Galaxy evolution
  • Starbursts in interacting galaxies
  • Large scale structure

Awards & Honors

  • Colgate University, 2007 Physics & Astronomy Department Founders Award for his research and contribution to astronomy outreach.

Brief Biographical Sketch

As an undergraduate, he worked with both ground- and satellite-based observations of extragalactic phenomena, as well as computer simulations describing their underlying physics. His research focused on optical studies of quasar variability, star-forming regions in distant, interacting galaxies, multi-wavelength surveys of galaxy evolution, and modeling the dependence of galaxy spectra on their environments. He is co-author to a number of scientific papers on these topics.

Besides continuing his work on galaxy evolution, Brendan teaches a lab-based introductory Astronomy class, and assists in developing and managing an innovative, web-based astronomy course for over 600 students. His current interests primarily lie in the development and evaluation of new resources in Astronomy education and outreach programs, or more generally in the uneasy interface of the public and the “ivory tower.”

Brendan Mullan is also an aspiring science writer and science advocate. Both at Colgate and at Penn. State, he has been involved with science public relations through outreach initiatives like planetarium shows, department open houses, hands-on activities for children, and 3D visualizations. He also writes on occasion for Accuweather’s monthly Astronomy news column.

On the nonscientific front, Brendan is an avid Nordic skier and fitness enthusiast.
